Shae Goes To South Africa.

DSC_0805My best biddy found herself in South Africa this August, for a hygienist conference of all things (who would have thought being a hygienist had travel perks!). I was lucky enough to steal her SD-cards for the past few weeks so I could share her trip on the blog.
When I met up with shae for lunch after her trip to discuss all things South Africa, I was really surprised to hear how much stuff she did that wasn’t  safari-based. To be honest South Africa has never been high on my travel-list so I have never done much research into it, but I assumed the majority of it’s tourism is all about the wildlife safari’s. Everyone wants to see the elephants and giraffes right?! But there is so much more the country has to offer, which I soon found out…
Shae and her friend Tracey visited Cape Town, Botswana, Zambia, and lots of other places that I would struggle to try and spell (sorry!). They were lucky enough to find a local driver who they booked for 3 days to take them around Cape Town, which I personally know is a huge MUST if you can do, no-one knows the spots better than the locals. Plus they can take you to all the off-road tourist attractions you might not read about on tripadvisor or in your Lonely Planet guide! During their 3 days they did a lot of market shopping (lots of cheese & jewelry by the looks of it!), hang-gliding, and visiting the local villages. This is where the heart melts, the children are incredibly friendly and curious of their fair-skinned visitors, and you can interact with them just with your smiles and friendly notions, not even knowing each other’s languages. That’s pretty special! We can’t forget the wine regions of South Africa either, the history of wine in this country goes back to the 1600′s, so it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing! We don’t get much of the wine here, so I have never tried it myself, but will add it to my list.
And lastly, yes, they did experience a lot of animal love. Patting cheetahs. Walking alongside lion cubs. And a safari tour which Shae said was one of the best experiences of her life! They travelled by plane in between most of their spots during the safari, which is common enough to be used like a local bus service. Their days were broken up into early morning tours, back home to rest, then late night tours. This way they got to see as many animals as possible and still got to rest. They also had some great “glamping” accommodation with surreal views! Plus a very special mention of the sunsets in this part of the world – insane, just insane!
Well looks like I’ll be adding another destination to my Bucket List. Thanks to Shae for letting me share her adventure, great stories & photos x
